Basilica Cistern - Istanbul, Turkey

Close to the Hagia Sophia is the Basilica Cistern which through a complex system of aqueducts and reservoirs kept the city supplied with water during the Byzantine era.

There are 336 marble columns here, some beautiful with carvings and a walkway where visitors can wander around on, gaze at the fishes and enjoy the special atmosphere.

Of course don't forget to take the picture of the famous upside down head of the Medusa.  It wouldn't be that charming if Medusa was the right side up, would it ?
